Parque Quirilluca is an open classroom that promotes learning in contact with nature, offering students and the community a safe, accessible and enriching space to explore, learn about and value the natural environment.
One of the pillars of Parque Quirilluca is its role as an open classroom, a space where learning takes place outdoors, in direct contact with biodiversity, the landscape and natural processes. Throughout the year, the park receives school delegations from Puchuncavi and other towns in the Valparaiso Region, as well as university groups of biology, geology, forestry engineering, tourism, pedagogy, and agronomy, who make guided visits with their professors.
With easy access, educational infrastructure and permanent availability, Quirilluca is consolidating its position as a valuable and accessible resource for the community. Interested delegations need only coordinate their visit in advance to receive information and logistical support to ensure safe, participatory and memorable activities.
Know to Preserve
A constant monitoring program ensures the protection of the park through updated information, applied science and preventive actions that strengthen its active conservation.
Since 2015, Parque Quirilluca has been developing a continuous monitoring program to safeguard its main conservation targets. This work is led by a multidisciplinary team of professionals in collaboration with the park ranger corps, who carry out systematic censuses and evaluations to know the health status and behavior of the species that inhabit the park. Some of the most important actions include:
Monthly Monitoring of Piqueros (boobies or sula variegata)
Recording presence, distribution, and reproductive patterns in their nesting area.
Quarterly Monitoring of the Chungungo
(marine otter or lontra felina)
Focused on the description of its behavior and territorial dynamics.
Monitoring of the Sclerophyllous Forest
With emphasis on the northern acorns and local climatic data; includes action protocols for signs of deterioration.
Wildlife Monitoring
To assess biodiversity and changes in native species.
Monitoring of Native Flora
Focused on regeneration, distribution and cover.
Permanent Control of Invasive Exotic Species
To protect original ecosystems.
Monitoring of Exotic Fauna
Such as feral rabbits and dogs, with prohibited entry of pets and awareness campaigns to reduce their impact.
This monitoring system generates scientific knowledge and allows Maratue to make informed decisions to reinforce the park’s commitment to active and adaptive conservation of its natural heritage.
A New Way of Planning: Conservation, Community, and Quality of Life in Balance
The management and development of Parque Quirilluca are aligned with Maratue’s vision of sustainability, which conceives of the land as an integrated system where conservation, human use, and quality of life coexist in balance.
Planning not only defines residential or service areas, but also incorporates areas of high ecological value as essential green infrastructure. This approach recognizes the value of a harmonious and resilient territory, where each component contributes to collective well-being.
Instead of separating urban growth and conservation, Maratue connects and complements them, promoting responsible public use, environmental education and a sense of belonging. Conserve, educate and inhabit are pillars of the same purpose: Create a sustainable territory with a vision for the future.
